A look at Josh Shaw’s NFL betting ban

When the news broke that then Arizona Cardinals player Josh Shaw had betted on NFL matches, the league felt like they had no choice but to suspend him.

Banned until the end of the current season, he’s missed around 14 months since his suspension was handed down in November of 2019.

Clearly wanting to send a message to any player that is involved in gambling related activities, the NFL did precisely that. “If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football,” asserted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances.”

Although it was found Shaw didn’t use inside information or that the outcome of any match was compromised, their message was loud and clear. It was, however, a shock to hear that he betted against his own team. The actual bet that took place in Las Vegas is aptly described by ESPN. “On Sunday, Nov. 10, Shaw placed what was characterized as a low four-figure wager on a three-team parlay featuring the second-half results of three Week 10 games.

“The bet was made over the counter at a Las Vegas sportsbook operated by Caesars Entertainment. On one of the legs of his parlays, he took the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second half against the Cardinals, Shaw’s team. The other two legs of the parlay have not been revealed to ESPN,” they stated.

Apparently Shaw was caught due to him signing up for the casino’s rewards card program, which was quickly noticed by the organisation, subsequently resulting in the NFL being quickly notified. While he did initially appeal the ban, he later dropped his appeal, accepting to serve the term of his suspension.

With his ban set to be over soon, it’ll be interesting how Shaw goes getting his career back on track. One key lesson for Shaw and any other player to be extracted from all this is that the NFL certainly take any betting breaches extremely seriously and won’t hesitate to heavily punish any infringements.
